Heave To

To bring a vessel up in a position where it will maintain little or no headway, usually with the bow into the wind or nearly so. To bring vessel on a course on which she rides easily and hold her there by the use of the ship's engines (holding a position). To stop a boat and maintain position (with some leeway) by balancing rudder and sail to prevent forward movement, a boat stopped this way is "hove to"
