Leeboard

1. A board placed alongside a berth to keep its occupant form falling out when a boat heels.

2. These are paddle-shaped boards installed on the outside of the gunwale on each side of a sailboat. The board on the "lee" side is lowered to prevent leeway. Single leeboards are used as a way of converting a non-sailing boat to sail without the necessity of cutting holes in the hull or installing permanent outside keels.
