Word derives from the term "schoon/scoon" meaning to move smoothly and quickly. ( a 3-masted vessel is called a "tern").

First seen among 19th-century ships. It is multimasted and furls triangular sails.

The foremost mast is always shorter than the others.

The aft mast is the same size as or larger than the forward one(s),
