Planing

Operating mode of a high-speed craft in which most of the vehicle weight is supported by hydrodynamic lift rather than by static buoyant force and which is characterized by a clean flow separation at transom and chine. A boat is said to be planing when it is essentially moving over the top of the water rather than through the water.
