| Ballast Tanks Double bottoms for carrying water ballast and capable of being flooded or pumped out at will. Trailerable sailboats often use water as ballast with a double bottom arrangement that allows flooding the space when in the water and draining it when the boat is put on its trailer, thereby significantly reducing the load to be towed. Some racing sailboats use water ballast tanks located high in the hull on each side to improve stability under sail. These are fitted with pumps and valves to permit rapid transfer from one side to the other or to empty when not needed. Power boats used for wakeboarding are often fitted with water ballast tanks in the stern section to force the stern lower and produce a larger sternwave for the wakeboard rider.
