| Supercargo Originally, an officer who superintended care of cargo, arranged for its sale at foreign ports, and managed all commercial business attending a merchant vessel's voyage. Now, one appointed by a charterer or shipper to supervise care of cargo with view of effecting sound and proper delivery of goods, livestock, etc. Also, in some cargo liners, a freight clerk, whose duties require arrangement and supervision of stowage and attention to all clerical matters connected with receipt and delivery of cargo at the several ports of call. |
