Gurdy

1. A hand-crank which fits across the bow; used to haul in lines heavy with fish.

2. A set of hydraulic gurdies is used on a salmon troller commercial fishboat. The fish catching lines lead from the gurdy spool through the "hayrack" and over the side. The lines can be individually hauled (to remove a fish) and reset. Salmon trollers use heavy weights for trolling, called "cannon balls". These are too heavy for frequent pulling by hand.
